Welcome to this year’s VVDO DJs, Miss Dom and Vintage Vamp! They will be juggling vinyl all weekend, so be sure to catch them on the main stage.

Miss Dom

Miss Dom ‘Dom Nola’ is an Auckland DJ (aka Miss Dom) and former bFM programme director who fell for 45s as a young girl.

There was a 7″ of The Stones’ Honky Tonk Woman floating around in a large bag of records that my brother inherited from our grown-up sister; I loved that 7-inch so hard and kept going back to it again and again.”

She’s now spreading her love for them to her punters, while to some extent, mimicking the flexibility of music streaming: “You can almost shuffle them like playing cards and then see how a set can just magically come together. It’s the same songs creating a completely different vibe.”

But if putting your taste and knowledge on public display carries some risk, Nola enjoys the payoff.

“For me, playing vinyl makes me feel empowered, it’s a deeply personal experience, and as a woman in what is mostly a male-dominated arena, I find playing to people a good place to stand my ground. Especially if I can pull something special from the crate. The looks I get sometimes, “oh, you little blonde chick”, and I’ll pull out a 7-inch by Agent Orange or Bad Brains … then it’s ‘woah’.

So yeah, no pressure, but the prospects of records surviving another generation could come down to the likes of Dom. Vinyl’s best hope will be when it stops being seen as a hip and fashionable accessory and replaces the crappy T-shirt as the top-end expression of true fandom.

Vintage Vamp

Vintage Vamp is the alter ego of Merrin McCreadie, an enthusiastic vinyl record DJ and collector based in Auckland.  She has been a vintage chick for almost two decades, preferring vintage second hand, op shop finds to standard mall-based retail clothing.  Favouring the 60s look, however, enjoys dressing for any decade.  Her music matches her taste in fashion, favouring 60s soul and 70s funk and disco, however again enjoys music from any decade.  Vintage Vamp has done DJ sets at Golden Dawn, Ding Dong Lounge and Cross Street Market.  Her most enjoyable set was lighting up Golden Dawn for her Soul Train Disco, where she also managed 3 vintage outfit changes over 4 hours of DJ set and had the audience forming a soul train line.  She is super excited to be a part of the Very Vintage Day Out music experience!

The City of Sails Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival Club is a non-profit organisation established in 1988 and is one of Auckland’s largest 50’s & 60’s Rock ‘n’ Roll dance clubs. Our club is based in Bucklands Beach, East Auckland.

We provide dance lessons for juniors (under 18 years), adult beginners, intermediate and more advanced.  If you are organised and can come to lessons 6 months before your wedding we can even get you rock and roll dancing your first dance. There is always something we can all learn.  We have members of all levels and abilities.  It doesn’t matter if you have not danced before, our beginners’ lessons will take you through the basics and you can progress to lessons at other levels.

The City of Sails Rock ‘n’ Roll Revival Club has a full events calendar each month for you to enjoy a dance and socialise with club members. Clubs nights are only $2 and run on most Tuesday evenings 7.15 pm to 9.15 pm once a week from early February to early December, dances are once a month for eight months of the year and competitions are run twice a year.  We also try to promote other places you can dance on Friday and Saturday nights.  So, there are ample places to meet up with us.

We will be performing at The Very Vintage Day Out on Saturday afternoon from approx. 1.15 pm. Come and say hello and have a to chat to us about taking some lessons and joining our club. Membership cost ranges from $15 to $40 for the year and lessons are approx. $25 per person per set of 4 or 6 weeks. The club is full of friendly welcoming people and we would love to see you.  Great fun and great fitness.  If you happen to love dressing up in clothing from the 50s era, even better.

Owner Judy began 19 Black 10 years ago after a trip to Vegas as an online shop with a quirky retro tee shirt line, and the business naturally grew into the gorgeous modern vintage fashion store it is today. The Hamilton store is run by Judy herself, her two daughters, Charlotte and Summer, her daughter-in-law, Annabel, and her Mum, Lyn. If you have visited the store or a 19 Black pop up at any of the many events and car-shows we attend, you may have seen some, if not all, of our family in action (Husband, Son, Son-in-law, and 2-year-old Grandson included!)

As Mr 19 Black often spends time-based in Timaru for work and after visiting many times, Timaru was the obvious choice for our second location and we opened earlier this year at 302 Stafford Street. The Timaru store is staffed by three lovely local ladies; Ella, April and Suzi.

This year we have also celebrated our 10th Birthday!

This will be our fourth year attending VVDO and we were thrilled to be approached by Sheena and her team to be the lead sponsor for the newly titled ’19 Black Miss Pinup New Zealand 2018′.
